Polace village is situated on the north side of the island right next to the ancient Roman palace after which it is named. Polace is the largest and safest port of Mljet surrounded by islands. That port has a long and rich history. Because of its great maritime characteristics and remains of ancient architecture it is visited by many yachts, catamarans and other vessels. The town has several private villa for accommodation, as well as cafes and restaurants. There are also some bakeries and stores. Polace is one of the oldest towns on the island. The remains of a Roman palace dating from the 3rd century, spas, two early Christian basilicas, arsenal and storehouse for the galleys testify the fact. This is the third largest and best preserved Roman monument on the Croatian Adriatic coast after the Diocletian Palace in Split and the Arena in Pula.
