Mljet is situated in the South Dalmatian group of islands. It is the most southern and the most eastern of all our bigger islands. It streches parallely to the eastern half of the peninsula Peljesac which is separated from Mljet by 8 km wide channel. Northwest end of the island (Cape Goli) is located 18 km from Korcula. Cape Gruj on the southeastern end of the island is located 30 km from Dubrovnik. Shortest maritime route from the island of Mljet to Peljesac on Sobra-Papratno direction is 5 NM. The distance from Dubrovnik to Sobra is 24 miles. Mljet is very well connected with the mainland. There are everyday shipping lines to Dubrovnik and Peljesac. It is connected by boat lines with Dubrovnik, Peljesac, Sipan, Korcula, Split, Lastovo and Bari in Italy in summer. The construction of a heliport is planned together with an airport for smaller aircrafts.
If we could describe heaven on Earth in just one word, we would tell it is Mljet. This garden of Eden, the National Park Mljet (from 1960.) is situated on this island on the open sea. It is a unique phenomenon thanks to its beauty, harmony of nature, landscaped bays, Mediterranean climate, and the two-pearls;small and large lake. It justifies the name of the national park because apart from the richness of its ancient forests, bays and islands, untouched natural oasis part of its harmony makes the rich cultural heritage. The first to point out is the Benedictine Monastery of St.. Mary from the 12th century, in the middle of the Great Lake as a mute witness to the cultural richness.
There are 3 camps on Mljet today , together with many private renters and restaurants, while the only hotel on the island is "Ulysses" in Pomena.
